Surrounded by the beauty of the Monterey Bay on one side and the costal hills and redwood forests on the other, Aptos is a small, scenic beach town in Santa Cruz County set between Rio del Mar on the south and Capitola to the north. For beach-goers, it is perhaps best known for Seacliff State Beach with the cement ship, the SS Palo Alto, permanently stuck by the shore. (When I was a kid, we could go onto it – but no more.)
There is a belief that the Native Americans named this area Awatos – “Where the Waters Meet” – because of the two creeks that run through the town and join together before entering the bay. Rich and diverse in natural beauty, this area also boasts a great diversity in architectural styles, full of attractive residential neighborhoods, and a popular downtown. Home prices vary from fairly entry level and affordable (by local standards) to luxury homes, often with views. But play hard, work hard! Students of this area are served by the high quality Pajaro Valley Unified School District where students excel.
