A prestigious town with a rural feel, Atherton of the San Mateo County is just a short leap away from Palo Alto and Stanford University. The towns name comes from Faxon Atherton, who built a mansion and resided on 600 acres of land in this area after becoming rich from hide and tallow trading in Chile. Known for its heritage trees, the town spans across flatlands with old oaks, bays, cedars and more, and goes up into the foothills where you can catch a view of the bay. A small, quiet community it has no industry within the town limits, so residents shop in neighboring cities. This low crime, high end gem of a town is also served by great schools both private and public, and CalTrain makes commuting throughout the bay easy.
