One of the very few larger, young areas on the Peninsula is the community of Redwood Shores. Although it is within the City Limits of Redwood City and Belmont, this is a distinct community east of US 101 between the freeway and the bay. The beautifully landscaped homes are set among lagoons and saltwater ways with a network of bicycle and walking trails. A major shopping center recently opened and the community has a number of high-rise office buildings including the very large Oracle complex. Redwood Shores depends on the cities across the freeway for police and fire support as well as for school and churches. Because of the economic power behind this rapidly growing community, it is expected that it will soon develop its own social infrastructure.
Back to the bayfront housing: you can get waterfront homes in Redwood Shores and Foster City, which are on the north end of “Silicon Valley” on the Peninsula.
What are the challenges or issues with homes in Redwood Shores?
Many of those areas are on landfill, and although well compacted, that fill is sitting on old bay mud. Some structures in those areas have had problem with an undue amount of movement. Others have had salt water get to their foundations, which can cause the re-bar inside to rust (making the foundation far less strong). Both of these things can cause damage via foundation cracking and the repairs can be expensive.
What are the major plusses of Foster City and Redwood Shores?
Both communities are super clean and attractive (I have sold homes in both). Because the subdivisions are newer, the planning has been better than in some older parts of Silicon Valley. There are beautiful parks, wide, gently turning roads, and a very tidy feel about the area. Some of the schools are really excellent.
