Silicon Valley FAQs

Silicon Valley FAQWhere is Silicon Valley?

Silicon Valley is an industry nickname for a region primarily located in the south San Francisco Bay area and the Santa Clara Valley. The name often primarily refers to Santa Clara County (the orange section in image at right) plus a little of San Mateo, Alameda, and sometimes Santa Cruz Counties. From the middle of Silicon Valley, it’s about an hour by car to San Francisco and about 30 minutes by car to the beach at Santa Cruz.

What Cities are in Silicon Valley?

In Santa Clara County list includes these cities: San Jose, Campbell, Cupertino, Sunnyvale, Santa Clara, Monte Sereno, Saratoga, Palo Alto, Los Altos, Los Altos Hills, Mountain View, Milpitas, Morgan Hill, Gilroy, and the town of Los Gatos.

What is Silicon Valley Like?

Our weather is hard to beat: we have 300 sunny days per year, on average. The area is full of microclimates, with temperate bayfront regions, hot and dry inland areas, and foggy coastal mountain ranges.

Silicon Valley is a diverse melting pot, but there are many common threads that make up the community. There is a true appreciation and and value placed on innovation, entrepreneurship and hard work in terms of industry and labor. This is reflected in many area’s focus on scholarly excellence, from grade school up. There are also celebrated global and cross-cultural footholds, built by many waves of immigration to the area over the last decades and centuries.

Recreational opportunities abound whether you’re a sports fan (Shark’s, 49ers, and Earthquakes), an outdoor enthusiast, a music and theatre fan, or just want to do some fine dining and wine tasting.

One major downside is the high cost of housing, something which the area has struggled with for decades and which has only worsened with recent inflation.

The area is urban and heavily populated, but sprawling and varied (so don’t expect miles and miles of skyscrapers). Many communities are comprised of somewhat dense suburban neighborhoods with thriving downtown districts. Areas like downtown San Jose can give the true urban experience, but travel to south county or the foothills and mountains and it can feel extremely remote.

And as the name suggests, it’s a hub of everything high-tech!
